Program
Lucerne - Alpnachstad-Pilatus Kulm - Alpnachstad - Lucerne
Meeting at Lucerne central station at 08:00 and departure by bike to Alpnachstad. For those arriving from Ticino we recommend the 5:45 am train departing from Locarno.
The cycling route to Alpnnachstad is 18km long on a mostly flat scenic route along the shore of Lake 4 Cantons. When we arrive at our destination we will leave our bicycles at the train station (bring a lock) and we will change before starting the ascent on foot to the Pilatus.
The path leading to the summit is a T2 (medium difficulty) for a distance of 7.5km and a total elevation gain of 1623m. The path crosses the Pilatus Bahn line several times, the steepest cog railway in the world in operation since 1889 and offers numerous breathtaking views of the Lake of the Four Cantons and the surrounding mountains.
The view once you reach the top of Pilatus (2106m) and the descent by rack make up for all the effort made to get to the top. We will then take the bicycles back to Lucerne where it will be possible to visit the old city before taking the train back home.
